The team consisted of nine employees of the Bruntsfield Bedding Centre and they completed the challenge by pushing the standard hospital bed a staggering 3233 miles. This bed push world record still stands today. Anyone want to break it - go on ........... have a go ..... but don't ask us... | |||||
This bed pushing marathon started on 21st June 1979, operating a system of three or four hour shifts, 24 hours night and day without the bed stopping. Norman Laidlaw was the captain of the team which included Kathy Laidlaw, John Cumming, Rod Kinnell, George Swanson, Tim Edie, Bill Carr, Sandy Gilles and Charisse Bird. But before the end Sandy had dropped out with sore feet and John went on his honeymoon (which he said he enjoyed immeasurably more). John (and Jill) went up the hill from the Cramond foreshore (and bed push circuit) to get married at the Cramond Kirk and as soon as they left the church they jumped on the bed (similar to the one being used for the Bed Push) to be pushed away on their honeymoon - they just couldn't wait ..... | |||||
